Understanding animals and their environment
Movement is a trait shared by all life on Earth. My work looks to understand how the behaviour of individual animals can inform the distribution of animal species.
My research has used tagging technologies to “follow” the movement paths of animals and aims to understand the behaviour of individuals. I then interpret the choices made by animals whilst they undertake key behaviours such as foraging.
I have also been involved in a variety of projects using broad scale survey techniques, including ship-based and aerial surveys for seabirds and cetaceans. More recently, I have started developing research in animal social networks and in the study of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) in the Antarctic.
A series of figures from recent publications studying the outbreak of HPAI in the Antarctic
Tagging technologies can be used to explore novel behaviours - such as this study that documents lateralisation (handedness) in northern gannets
My publications can be seen on Google Scholar. I am always happy to hear from people interested in my research or if you require access to any publications.
