Bird Island is a rocky and remote sub-Antarctic island off the western tip of South Georgia. The British Antarctic Survey has maintained a base here since the late 1970s, researching the ecology of albatross, petrels, penguins, and fur seals.

Long-term monitoring enables scientists to understand and identify the key processes driving these populations. Since monitoring began, albatross numbers have declined dramatically at Bird Island - largely due to fisheries bycatch on the high seas. Data collected at Bird Island is reported back to a variety of international bodies, such as the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and the Association for the Conservation of Albatross and Petrels (ACAP). All of this helps to enforce conservation measures.

Bird Island is a unique place. Wildlife occupies every available space, from the nest mounds of wandering albatross, to the sprawling penguin rookeries, to the seal pups sleeping around the base. It is a place to be protected.
